a nest and, therefore, does not create a family (can not preserve it); b) the cuckoo is a widow; c) the cuckoo does not rear children and, therefore, does not have any; d) the cuckoo is a bad mother, a bad wife; e) the cuckoo is an orphan; f) the cuckoo is a symbol of unfaithfulness; g) the cuckoo pairs with pother species of wild forest birds.
On the “language” level of the research zoonyms have been named which are used for secondary nomination in other spheres. They draw up the picture of semantic links of the cuckoo character with realities of other symbolical systems. Semantic-functional “partners” of the cuckoo character among animals are swallow, sea-gull, partially crow, hawk, ant, lady-bird; among the trees - birch, poplar, willow; among plants - some species of orchids and pansy flowers, in anthropomorphic code - the figure of Marena.
Aesthetic meaning of the bird character is connected with mytho-poetic meaning of the cuckoo. At the same time transition from the mytho-poetic to the aesthetic takes place with certain “editing” of the meaning. Revaluation of the characters connected with blurring of myth-perceptions, as a rule, is accompanied by smoothing out all spontaneous, indistinguishable-chaotic, terrifying and surmounting - everything that bears traces of primeval terror of primordial-chaotic perception of nature. Negative connotations fade, and the cuckoo of jolly spring comes to the foreground. In the Ukrainian’s tonality of ethno=aesthetics the image of the bird acquires the role of the artistic means, deepening psychological mood of lyrical protagonist and puts the listener into emotional state of mind.
Conclusions give a summary of the research and outline perspectives of further studies of the traditional Ukrainian animal symbolics. Zoo-morphic characters create a universal symbolical system, whose elements allegorically indicate all phenomena without exception of natural and social reality and function in all genres and forms of culture, fill up temporal-spatial sections of the folklore model of the world.

Диссертация является первым комплексным исследованием животной образно-символической системы украинского фольклора. В работе проанализирована специфика животного образного мира как системы символов, установлены причины универсальности зоосимвола и выработана методика анализа отдельного животного персонажа. Так же рассмотрен фольклорный образ-символ кукушки с его символической сущностью и функциональной ролью в текстах (или обрядных ситуациях, если они объясняют текст). Отдельно обращено внимание на эстетическую роль орнитоморфного символа в народной поэзии.
