Диссертация является комплексным исследованием феномена мифологического фольклоризма в украинской литературе. В работе на основе анализа мифологических образов, фольклорных сюжетов и мотивов в структуре художественных произведений Ольги Кобылянской, Михаила Коцюбинского, Леси Украинки и других писателей определены основные тенденции развития фольклоризма в литературе начала ХХ в., сферы и явления фольклора, которые оказались наиболее способны к актуализации и формально-смысловым преобразованиям в художественном творчестве. Изучены способы трансформации фольклорного элемента у разных по стилю и художественным исканиям писателей

The thesis is the comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of mythological folklorism in the literary works at the beginning of the 20th century from the point of view of contemporary studies. The thesis consists of introduction, three chapters, conclusions and bibliography. The introduction substantiates the choice of the theme, formulates its aims and tasks, defines its object, subject and methods of investigation, its connection with research programs and syllabus reviews the history of the study. The novelty of the research, theoretical and practical significance of the obtained results has been shown and approbation data to the main provisions of the thesis presented at the conferences and research publications are submitted.

Chapter 1 tackles main tendencies of correlation between folklore and fiction, delineates the main notions of folklorism, singles out its levels, ways and methods of interpretation of folklore material in the structure of literary works at the beginning of the 20th century, substantiates the questions of interrelation of mythology and fiction in terms of folklore-literature interaction. Special emphasis is given to the historical stages of Ukrainian folklore and fiction correlation. The given process is continuous and becomes one of the most essential characteristics of our belles-lettres. The beginning of the 20th century is the most productive stage in the establishment of phenomenon of folklorism in Ukrainian literary tradition.

Chapter 2 singles out specific features of traditional folklore-mythological motive and plot functioning. Folklore genre influence on the literary work composition is analysed here. In literary context folklore plot while preserving the basic structural elements predicts it recognisability and models it according to a new ideological principle. On the basis of O.’ka, Lesya Ukrainka and others’ it was found out that mythologemes serve as a structural framework for fictional organization and semantic and compositional integrity. They are capable of creating symbolization, typologisation and metaphorisation of the reality and are capable of forming a chain of symbolic associations which underline and emphasize the main idea of the work.

Chapter 3 analyses specific features of mythological characters poetic transformation in literary works of O.’ka, M.’kyy, Lesya Ukrainka, Oleksandr Oles’, H.V.’kyy and others, defines ways and methods of their transformation taking into consideration characteristics of the individual style of writing. There are different creative approaches to a mythological prototype within one stylistic tendency: portrait-descriptive reproduction as the main means of artistic image-creation inherent to prose and to a certain extent juxtaposed to dynamic interpretation of folklore image in the context of dramatic genres. Among Ukrainian mythology characters who became objects of literary transformations the writers’ attention is drawn to mavka/rusalka (mermaid), lisovyk (forestman), lisovychka (forestwoman), chuhaystyr, perelesnyk and others. Creative reproduction of syntagmatic mythological level crystallized individual approach to archaic images and beliefs comprehension, the authors’ mythological creativity as an important factor of mythological manifestation in the works of Ukrainian modernists.

Conclusions generalize the results of the given research. Folklorism as one of the ways of folklore and fiction correlation proves the important role of folklore in the establishment of national literature in different periods of our society development. Folklore is a domineering factor of preservation of our national Ukrainian conscience and spiritual culture. Mythological folklorism in Ukrainian literature at the beginning of the 20th century manifested itself on genre, plot, motive, character and stylistics level.
